  Information for Russian participants

   THE THIRD ANNOUNCEMENT

  Dear participants,

In this  announcement the Local organizing committee presents additional technical details concerning participants' arrival to Moscow and some useful information about Moscow and Pushchino. We are glad to report that 83 astronomers are registered as participants of the conference.

 1. Arrival

As soon as you book your air tickets, please let the LOC know the arrival date, time, and flight number. The Local Organizing Committee is planning to meet  most participants who come from outside the Commonwealth of Independent States in the airport (there are three airports in Moscow, the code of your arrival airport is indicated in your ticket). We will send you an e-mail confirmation that we are meeting your flight. If the circumstances of your arrival do not permit the LOC to meet the flight or if, for any reason, you do not find the LOC representatives meeting you in the airport, proceed according to the following instructions concerning transportation from Moscow airports to the Sternberg Astronomical Institute.

The most practical way to get to Moscow from the airports are Air Express trains. They are comfortable, clean, and safe. We do not recommend to take a taxi from the airport to the Sternberg Institute. Traffic jams are quite possible in the second half of a day, especially on Sunday, so your trip to the city may take up to two hours.  Besides, taxies from airports are rather expensive (approx 30-40 Eu). At any case, never take a non-licensed taxi. There are also minibuses (“marshrutka” in Russian) which run regularly between the airports and the nearest metro stations. Their stop is close to the exit doors of the airport.

Most participants will arrive to Sheremetyevo International Airport, Terminal F. Air Express station is close to the terminal. The schedule of departures of Air Express trains from the airport is:

  05:00, 06:30, 07:00, 08:00, 08:30, 09:30, 10:00, 10:30, 12:30, 13:00, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30, 15:00, 15:30, 16:00, 16:30, 17:00, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 20:00, 21:00, 22:00, 22:30, 23:30

The trains go to Byelorussky Railway Station in Moscow. The ride takes 35 minutes. A ticket for the train should be purchased in front of the entrance to the Sheremetyevo railway station, the price is Rbl. 300 (about US $10). Keep the ticket till your arrival to Moscow, you will need it to exit the station.

If you arrive to the Sheremetyevo Airport Terminal D, you will have to take a free shuttle bus to Terminal F and railway station.

Participants arriving to Domodedovo International Airport should take Air Express to Paveletsky Railway Station in Moscow. Note that international arrivals are in the left wing of the airport building, and the railway station is in the right wing. There are signs indicating the direction to the station in many places of the airport. The train schedule is:

  7:00, 7:30, 8:00, 8:30, 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 12:00, 13:00, 13:30, 14:00, 15:00, 15:30, 16:00, 17:00, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, 21:30, 22:00, 22:30, 23:00, 24:00

The price is Rbl. 300 (about US $10), the ride takes about 40 minutes. Keep the ticket till your arrival to Moscow, you will need it to exit the station.

In the (least likely) case of your arrival to Vnukovo International Airport, take the Air Express to the Kievsky Railway Station. The price is Rbl. 300 (about US $10), it takes about 35 minutes to get to Moscow. The trains start every hour from 7:00 am to 1:00 am (except 13:00).

 2. How to reach the Sternberg Institute.

From the Moscow railway stations, you can get to the Sternberg Institute by taxi (approximate cost: US $10–15). It is also possible to use metro. All the three railway stations in question have transfer metro stations close to them ("Byelorusskaya", "Paveletskaya", "Kievskaya"). The price of a single metro ride is Rbl. 26 (about US $0.9); it should be paid in Russian currency at the cash counter near the entrance to the metro station. We suggest that you take the circle (brown) line to "Park Kul'tury" station, make a change to the red line there and go to the "Universitet" station. The Moscow metro map you can find in the attachment to this letter or at http://www.newsmetro.ru/metroproba8e.jpg. From there, you can walk about one mile according to the attached map or take a trolleybus (No. 28, three stops along the Prospect Verdadskogo towards the north-east up to the “University prospect” stop.). Trolleybus drivers sell one-ride tickets for Rbl. 28 (about US $1).

It is expected that most participants will arrive on Sunday, May 30. Participants arriving to Moscow on that day are asked to come to Sternberg Astronomical Institute (SAI), located in the campus of Moscow University (address: 13, University prospect, close to the corner of Vernadsky Avenue). The registration desk for final registration will work at the SAI during the time interval: from 11 am till 6 pm. At about 6 pm or a little later, a bus to the “Tsargrad” hotel will start from the SAI (the time will be specified and   placed at the conference site when the we gather all information about the arrival time of participants).   If the circumstances of your arrival do not permit you to come to Sternberg Astronomical Institute not latter than 6 pm, please inform the LOC about it as soon as this problem appears, and we will try to solve it individually.

If you asked for accomodation in Moscow University, your room will be booked since June, 2 in the  University guest house  (inside of the main 32-storey building of the University,  eastern wing, sector E). It is ten minutes by foot from the Sternberg astronomical institute. You will be accompanied there  by someone of LOC members.

The guest rooms are more cheap than those in Tsargrad hotel in Pushchino, no credit cards are accepted.

 3. How to reach Pushchino.

LOC will try to save you from this problem, just keep contact with the organizers.  At any case we inform you that Pushchino is about 100 km to the south from Moscow (1.5 hours by car if the traffic is not too heavy).  . It can be reaches by buses N359 or minibuses “Moscow–Pushchino” (Москва–Пущино). Go directly to PRAO and seek for somebody from LOC. We help you to go to Tsargrad hotel.

Buses depart from the metro station “Yuzhnaya” (grey line). Use the exit at the head of metro train, then turn left and left again (see the scheme attached). Tickets may be bought in a bus (about 200 rbls). Buses depart between 7.45 am and 10 pm (minibusses – between 7.30 am and  9.30 pm) with the interval of about one hour. A time-table may be found at http://www.prao.ru/pass/pass.html (in Russian). Please inform LOC if you choose this way to reach Pushchino.

 4. Money.

You will need a small amount of Russian cash to buy tickets; we suggest that you use an ATM at the airport.  1 Eu is equal to  approximately 38-40 rubles (April 2010). Currency exchange at the airport can have an unfavorable rate, so we do not recommend to exchange large amounts of money there. In Moscow, there are exchange offices at all railway stations and in the streets.

Credit carts are usually accepted in large supermarkets only.

Note: a hotel “Tsargrad”  in Pushchino (see http://www.heliotours.ru/tsargrad/) accepts both rubles and credit cards.

 5. Roaming for users of foreign cell phones.

The cell phone standard in Russia is GSM 900/1800. It is the same as in most countries of Europe but differs from the US standard. If you are going to use your cell phone in Russia, please check if your cell phone supports the GSM 900/1800 standard.

If your cell phone provider has an agreement with at least one of the Russia's main providers (MTS, Beeline, Megaphone), you will be able to use your phone in Russia. Note that the rates can be rather high (dependent on the terms of the agreement between the providers), and even incoming calls can be taxed. However SMSs are cheap. If your phone is not SIM-locked, you can buy a Russian SIM card at the airport; this can be a money-saving solution.

For roaming information from Russian providers MTS and Beeline, see English-language web pages
  http://www.mts.ru/coverage/guests/eng/

 6. Roaming for users of foreign cell phones.

The mean day temperature in Moscow in the end of May is about 17-20oC, it could be a little chilly in the evening, so you might need warm clothing.
